My Dad was in Radio Communications from an early age to his retirement. He has since passed away in 1985. He had a very interesting and varied career in the Marine Sector, MOT and DOC.

Joseph Vincent (Joe) Davies, born April 26, 1919 in Halifax, NS, passed away at his home in Ottawa on December 19, 1985. He was survived by his wife Frances and sons, Paul and David.
Joe went to Radio School in Halifax, Nova Scotia and gained his Certificate of Proficiency in Commercial Radio in 1937. He served in the Merchant Marine as Radio Officer and joined the Department of Transport (DOT) in 1939 serving as Radio Operator on the “SS Belle Isle”, the “Sambro Light Ship” and on stations at Camperdown, Halifax Marine and Nottingham Island, Hudson Strait (1945). Joe and family went to Sable Island, NS via the “Lady Laurier” (1948-51).

On August 20, 1951, he received the Star, Atlantic Star and War Medal for his service from 1939-45. Joe was promoted to Radio Inspector and served in that capacity four years in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Joe was posted to Ottawa in 1959 and worked in the Station Licensing Section of DOT/DOC until his retirement in 1974, thus completing 35 years of service in the Federal Government.

Joe was an active radio amateur. His call signs over the years were VE1IC in NS, V01ER in NFLD, VE3CWD in ON and finally VE3YQ. For many years he was a member of CARF and the Ottawa Amateur Radio Club. He was always willing to help his fellow amateurs and prospective amateurs in any way possible.
