I remember the launch rather well. A temporary teletype station had been set up at  CRC to connect with the launch site, because some of the technical expertise was at CRC and some at the launch site in California.

At that time , as now, I could type with two fingers so a few days before the launch, I was taken off my technical project and assigned to be a telex operator ...

Family members were invited to sit in the auditorium and wait for the news. There was a delay in the launch and when the repair was made there was a fruit train passing near the launch site, actually a train of oranges was passing, and waiting for the train to pass they missed the window and had to wait 24 hours.

So the intended launch was Sept 28, but was delayed to the 29th.
