Leading Canadian aviation officials and friends paid final tribute at a funeral service Saturday in St. Paul's Church, Lachine for Wilfrid F. Hilchie, District Superintendent of Airways for the Quebec District, who died in an automobile accident Thursday in Lachine. Rev. A.J. Marshall officiated.
A son of the late Col. Hugh N. Hilchie of Weston, Ontario, and of Mrs Hilchie of Toronto and Lachine. Mr. Hilchie was educated at Trinity College School, Port hope and University of Toronto.
In 1927, he obtained his wings from the Royal Canadian Air Force and from 1931 to 1936 served with the Royal Air Force, including two years with a flying boat squadron in Singapore.
He joined the Department of Transport in 1937, serving successively as radio range operator, air traffic control officer and inspector of civil aviation before being appointed district superintendent. He was also well known in civil aviation circles through his association with Dominion Skyways Limited and other companies.
Besides his mother, he leaves his wife, the former Dorothy Way and three sons, John, David and Larry.
The honorary pall-bearers were Air Marshal A.T. Cowley, Major R. Dodds, Air Vice Marshal A. de Niverville, C.T. Travers, C.R. Robertson, Dr. C.J. Arnell, H. Horn, D.B. Rees, F.L. Davis and A.D. McLean.
Representatives of the Department of Transport from Headquarters at Ottawa and from Montreal District attended the service.
