Obituary

Clarence Edward (Babe) Marcelle

August 20, 1914 - June 4, 2009

CLARENCE EDWARD (BABE) MARCELLE

Clarence Marcelle, known affectionately as Babe to his family and friends, passed away peacefully at the St. Boniface Hospital on June 4, 2009, at the age of 94. Babe was born in Winnipeg to Beatrice and James Marcelle on August 20, 1914, but spent his childhood and youth in Sioux Lookout, Ontario.

In his younger adult years he worked as a radio officer for the Ministry of Natural Resources at mining camps in northern Ontario, but most of his career was spent with the Department of Transport as a radio officer and later as an inspector of installations in such northern outposts as Baker Lake, Iqualuit, and Resolute Bay.

In 1939, he married Winnifred Webb of Swift Current, and had one daughter, Carol ( Bonnie ) Marcelle. In 1969 he married Marjorie Wold, and shortly thereafter they retired from Winnipeg to build a home on Clearwater Bay, Lake of the Woods, where they lived until moving to Winnipeg in September 2008.

Babe loved sports, especially baseball and hockey, but he was happiest when he was in the great outdoors. From his earliest years, he canoed and fished and hunted, often going into northern Manitoba to fish the waters of Lake Winnipeg and other smaller, remote lakes. Babe also loved his motorcycles, beginning with the Indian in the late 1930's and moving to Harleys in later years. Babe continued to ride his latest Harley well into his 80's. He also owned and enjoyed many snowmobiles over the years, taking off with Marjorie for weekends in the snow.

Babe was predeceased by his sister Helen Meadowcroft and his brother Hayden Marcell. He will be much missed by his family, his wife Marjorie, his daughter Bonnie, his daughter-in-law Joyce Wold, grandchildren Trevor (Deanna) Wold, Andrea (Jason) Christensen and Aaron Wold and Kristen Parnell, great-grandchildren Jordan Christensen and Danica Wold, and nieces Ruthann (Bill) Adams, Elaine (Ray) Suddaby and nephew Ross (Pat) Meadowcroft.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Boniface Hospital for their kindness and support during his last days.
