ILLEGAL IN QUEBEC CITY

by: Laval Desbiens

In Beaumont, we had detected a bunch of pumpkin patrollers with MK19s operating around 2 megs in the Quebec City area. We told the office and the activities ceased. They were made aware ...probably by assisting ham radio operators.

A few weeks later, there they go again so I told Jean Paul Gagnon that we would find them...

So we installed an old NC100 Hallicrafter, filaments on the car battery, one of my dynamo motors for the B+, a loop antenna, a car AM radio antenna ripped off from somewhere and a whip antenna. So here we go, each day at noon, approaching each station on the AGC. Using the loop antenna we found all of them, over twenty stations.

´´. Non que je lui répond,on a pas le temps de s'occuper de ça...

One night, while attending a meeting of ham radio operators, a guy near me ask: "do you monitor bootleggers ? ". No I answer, we don't have time for this...

We transfered the file to Quebec City and a raid was planned with inspectors from Sherbrooke, Montreal, Quebec City as well as people from the RCMP. We hit all the places at the same time, some jumping from the shock...

An inspector also jumped from shock... having cut a live high tension wire with a nice pair of wire cutters... Everyone had wire cutters for the smooth running of things.

We filled a cell at the city jail with all the seized equipment...

It was my first operation of this type. There was another one in the Beauce region while I worked in Beaumont. The same method was used to locate the operators who were using the 5 MHz band. As we were traveling on farm roads, a far away antenna catched our attention and a sign near the road announced TOMATOES FOR SALE... We approached and saw a radio on a shelf in the greenhouse, so we asked the gardener "do you operate a radio"... No he answered but my son talks with his friend in Ste Hénédine...

Quel plaisir...

So much fun...
