Consistent with Industry Canada’s mission to foster a growing, competitive,
knowledge-based Canadian economy, the Spectrum, Information Technologies and
Telecommunications Sector (SITT) has constructed a new building on the
Communications Research Centre (CRC) campus. It houses both SITT's Certification
and Engineering Bureau and the National Capital Institute of Telecommunications
(NCIT). The latter is an independent institution aimed at fostering
telecommunications in the region. In pursuing this goal, NCIT has formed
partnerships with the CRC, local universities, and several high tech firms.
The Certification and Engineering Bureau certifies radio and
telecommunications equipment for the Canadian market, accredits testing
laboratories, and provides a testing facility that operates to international
standards. This enables the development of standardized measurement methods and
aids in resolving interference problems. These activities will generate a total
revenue of $8.5 million this year. The Bureau also has an emerging role in the
implementation of Mutual Recognition Agreements between nations, with respect to
exporter testing and certification of telecommunications equipment to the
requirements of the importer.
On Friday, February 4, Industry Minister John Manley toured the Bureau, met
the staff and viewed several demonstrations of the high technology services they
provide. Minister Manley was pleased with the achievement and wished the staff
continued success.

Dans le plus pur esprit de la mission d'Industrie Canada, qui est de favoriser
l'essor d'une économie canadienne concurrentielle fondée sur le savoir, le
Secteur du spectre, des technologies de l'information et des télécommunications
(STIT) à fait construire un immeuble dans le complexe du Centre de recherches
sur les communications (CRC). L'immeuble abrite le Bureau d'homologation et de
services techniques du STIT ainsi que l'Institut de télécommunications de la
capitale nationale, organisme indépendant qui favorise l'essor des
télécommunications dans la région en partenariat avec le CRC, les universités
locales et plusieurs entreprises de haute technologie.
Le Bureau homologue le matériel radio et le matériel de télécommunications
destinés au marché canadien, accrédite les laboratoires d'essai et fournit des
installations d'essai conformes aux normes internationales pour permettre la
mise au point de méthodes de mesure normalisées et la résolution de problèmes de
brouillage. Ces activités généreront des recettes de 8,5 millions de dollars au
cours du présent exercice. Le Bureau joue également un nouveau rôle dans la mise
en œuvre d'accords de reconnaissance mutuelle internationaux concernant l'essai
et l'homologation de matériel de télécommunications aux fins d'importation.
Le vendredi 4 février, le ministre de l'Industrie, John Manley, a visité le
Bureau, rencontré le personnel et assisté à plusieurs démonstrations sur les
services de pointe offerts. Le Ministre est fier de cette réalisation et a
encouragé les employés à poursuivre dans cette voie.
